Advice for the Moving Day.
Address changes. Packing advice. Preparation of furnishings. The choice of desired mover. 1. Changes of address. Establish the date when you’d like to move. Establish the date when public utility services ( Videotron, Rogers, TELUS, Fido, Bell, Postes Canada, Hydro-Québec, SAAQ, Gaz Métropolitain, Régie de l'assurance maladie, Assurance-emploi, Revenu Québec, Ministère de l'emploi et de la solidarité sociale, CSST) and other services need to be canceled. Inform all of the businesses to which you have a subscription of your new address. Establish the starting date of the public service utilities and other services at your new address. Transfer your bank accounts to a bank close to your new residence. Inform your family and friends of your new address and telephone number. 2. Packing Advice: Three weeks before the move, begin by packing objects which are rarely used or out of season. Pack the dishwasher in clean newspaper or bubble wrap in order to avoid staining. Place articles in the boxes from heaviest to lightest. Be sure to label “Fragile” and use arrows signaling “This Way Up” for boxes requiring special care. Do not overfill the boxes. The box shouldn’t be too heavy; a person should be able to carry it easily on his/her own. Cartons are designed to carry up to 25 kg (45 lbs.) The movers carry them (almost as if they were feathers). The bottoms of the boxes must be firmly sealed with the aid of tape. Close the boxes in such a way that they will not risk opening. Tape the bottoms of the boxes before filling them. Be careful to not overfill or underfill the boxes. By following this advice you will reduce the risk of damage. Pack all electronic and computing equipment in its original boxes. Using packing tape, tape up all removable pieces in order to avoid damage during the move. Label boxes according to the room where they will be placed (make a room map of your new home) : do the same for your furniture. This way the mover will save a lot of time and unpacking and setting up will be much easier. 3. Preparation of the furnishings. Disconnect all electric household appliances from electricity, water and gas. Empty the refrigerator and freezer at least 24 hours before the scheduled move. Certain moveable parts may need to be attached before the move: drums of washing machine and dry cleaner, the head of a VCR, disk reader, etc. When furniture must be dismantled make sure to place bolts, fasteners, and assembly instructions in a plastic bag, which you can tape to one of the larger pieces. It is your responsibility to ensure that the equipment is ready for transport, Avoid waxing wooden furniture before the move so that they won’t be marked by protective covers. Remove everything attached to the walls and floors: curtain rods, pictures, fixtures… 4. The choice of mover. Move with a professional, and sleep peacefully.
